We made masks to look like Bee-Bot

Prior to taking Bee- Bot out we used the instructional cards

Finding and Recognizing Shapes

Finding the number after rolling the dice

After reading the Hungry Caterpillar, we used the Bee-Bot and pictures to retell the story. Then  we made a dice using the pictures to locate the items on the board using the Bee-Bot to get there.

Learning Directions forward, backward, left and right

We programmed the Bee-Bots and simultaneously pressed Go!  which way to the finish line?

We discovered that they all moved the same distance and at the same speed

What is a Bee-Bot?

The bee-Bot is a small robot which looks like a bee. on it's back it has 6 buttons, the forward, backward and turning left or right patterns. The Bee-bot also has a pause button and a clear button. This link will tell you more information and has great ideas to use at home: BEE-BOT us

What purpose does it serve in educating our students of today?

Bee-Bots are easy to use and understand. They are portable and great to enhance learning in any curricular area. Maths skills and spatial awareness are prominent learning features.

 In the class room?

  • We discussed how humans control computers and robots, we use a language called coding.  We discussed the role of a Computer scientist and we  watched the video that I made on coding.

  • We reenacted coding using the 15cm  cards to program our Bee-Bots to program our class mates. Students and teachers found it difficult to listen and await directions as we made presumptions in regards to where we were going.

  • Using the Bee-Bot robot to program

  • We have learnt directions

  • We have learnt to count, recognise numbers,  shapes and objects

  • After reading the Hungry caterpillar we played a game of hungry caterpillar with the picture dice.

  • We have been locating letters on the mat and now we are using the Bee-Bot to locate our initials!

  • It's great we are having fun and being challenged too.

Observing Students

  • All the children are interested in spending time with the Bee-bot.

  • They use different strategies to work through the problem. Some children will use their finger and count ahead.  Some try to remember it after saying it out allowed. some move the robot step by step so as not to have too many instructions at once. Some students like to challenge them selves by giving the Bee-Bot the directions backwards, however they become stuck at turning it backwards as they are viewing it in a 'mirror way'

  • They are very excited about the use of Bee-Bot and are having fun!

  • All students are very persistent, no one has given up, they may ask for help or suggestions but they do it themselves.

Critical thinking

what do i need to press to get the bee-bot where it needs to be?

Program

Value of  Bee-Bot for education purposes:

  • Challenging thought process

  • Problem solving

  • Critical thinking

  • Working with peers to solve a problem

  • Enhance Mathematical concepts of patterns, sequencing and procedures.

  • Develop vocabulary, by using word such as forward, backwards, clear, the path and program

  • Enhance turn taking skills and social skills as they engage in play cooperatively to meet the same outcome.

  • Sequences, make patterns and make estimations.

  • Blending learning by adapting digital programs to other subjects such as using pic college to create a poster for English subject

  • Learning is modified or individualised to suit abilities and skills

  • Confident users for  future  generations in work place

Parent Feedback

  • Parents have commented that their child is sharing teaching them and sharing their experiences of what they have done at school with their parents at home.

  • They were not aware of Bee-Bots and using them for  educational purposes.

  •  Many parents have been impressed as was my colleges, to learn that children this young can be taught and exposed to a long life skill.

  • Are very excited in borrowing them to take home.

Implications:

  • Time has been mentioned as being difficult for some parents. We suggest setting aside 15 minutes. The resources are all ready prepared

For More Resources or Information on Bee-Bots, try these:

  2. sparkle box resources

  3. Bee-Bot Mats

  4. Bee-Bot ruler

These robots are different to the Bee-Bot but  also great for programming and coding.

Try these Apps,

Bee Bot is an app that can be downloaded on an iPad. it does not have show the steps you are taking to complete the path.

Bot logic on line is similar to Bee-Bot app, and it does show the path you need to create before pressing Go. This did help children to check their plan or refer back to

EXPLANATION NOTES:

As outlined in the Teaching Practices section of this website. Blooms Taxonomy is represented as a Cognitive model. The stages of learning across the top and the colour denoted to that area matches in accordance with SAMR. Multiple Intelligence is a theory by Gardner, applying the principal that learning occurs through 8 areas of intelligence these are highlighted in Green, I am using 7 out of the 8.

These activities link to Early Years Learning Frame work (EYLF)  and Australian Curriculum (AC). I have allocated the AC links, however for the  EYLF outcomes which apply to digital technologies head to the resource page,  titled ‘EYLF OUTCOMES’ these EYLF outcomes contribute to one or more of the following :

  1.  Outcome 1: children have a strong sense of identity,

  2. Outcome 2: children are connected with and contribute to their world: using play to investigate, project and explore new ideas participate with others to solve problems and contribute to group outcomes

  3. Outcome 3: children have a strong sense of wellbeing:  Demonstrate spatial awareness and orient themselves, moving around and through their environments confidently and safely,

  4. Outcome 4: children are confident and involved learners and

  5. Outcome 5: children are effective communicators;  Children begin to understand how symbols and pattern systems work, Children use information and communication technologies to access information,
